The recruitment industry has not escaped unscathed from the challenges to the economy brought on by the coronavirus. Some sectors have fared better than others with our recruitment customers in IT, life sciences and healthcare reporting a strong volume of new briefs in contrast to engineering, construction, events or other primarily physical sectors. Recruitment firms offering temp desks have benefitted from the uncertainty with many clients opting for temp support models until the current situation stabilises and more substantive resourcing commitments can be made.

1. Adjust your business targeting

Despite the headlines, recruitment demand is up across many sectors. Not seeing it? Time to widen your audience. We are seeing recruiters pivot very successfully to support in-demand sectors such as IT, life sciences, healthcare and specific areas of transportation, delivery, digital marketing and financial services. Temp paralegal support requirements are also high right now if your candidate pool can support that offering.

3. Revise your proposition

Revise your proposition to reflect the way that COVID-19 has affected short and medium-term demand. The major proposition changes we are seeing relate to the size and scale of new briefs, so focus on what you can offer in terms of availability, flexibility, volume, etc. Demand for candidates exists, and in many cases that demand is urgent and well funded. now is not a time to be offering discounts, better to structure contract models such as temp to perm options, to enable employers to take advantage of available candidates without making immediate long term commitments.

Appealing to candidates? Headhunt those candidates with transferrable skills who are currently based in the many industries making large visible reductions to headcount, position your service as an offer to redeploy them within a more stable business, perhaps operating in one of the more bullish/resilient sectors.

Flexible payment terms are also in demand if you can support this option (refund/replace policies, etc).

4. Revise your messaging

Forget your standard intro… Revise all messaging to set out how your proposition directly contributes to overcoming their current COVID-19 response needs. Be clear about the experience and insight that you can bring to the table in that regard. Offer longer payment terms where possible to reduce short-term financial pressure. Be flexible with opportunities to pause/freeze/postpone services so they can be better utilised when times are better. Provide more value via additional industry and support to help inform the industry on what’s happening.
